André Morell and Peter Cushing in The Hound Of The Baskervilles (1959)
For his role as Sherlock Holmes, Peter Cushing had to smoke a pipe, but, as he was either a non-smoker or didn’t like the taste of the pipe, he kept a glass of milk always to hand to remove the taste. (via)
The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1939) - Charles Laughton and a very good cast elevate this film. Laughton’s performance isn’t overwhelmed by the makeup and prostheses that he wears for the part, a testament to his skill. The scene where he initially refuses water from Esmerelda while being pilloried is still powerful. The bittersweet ending of the film is less macabre than the bittersweet ending of the book but it could’ve been worse. Sir Cedric Hardwicke stands out for his performance, which might devolved into caricature but instead is a mix of icy evil and conflicted passion. A legitimate classic.
Can’t wait for the new season!
